The last half of 2015 has seen explosive interest in domain names from Chinese buyers and investors. They are buying everything; however, they are particularly interested in domains that contain no Vowels (A, E, I, O, U) or V’s. The V’s still sell well in the right place in the domain. Domains without these characters are called CHIP’s (short for Chinese Premiums.) They also are buying everything that is a number domain. Domains like 121355.com would go for a lot of money. They particularly love pattern numbers and anything that contains 8, 18, 28, 38, 68, 88, 80, 81, 360, 567, etc. There is a lot online about Chinese number culture, and it can be a great guide when buying anything with numbers in it.
This buying boom has led a lot of American and other Anglo-English country domainers to speculate on “buy-outs”. Domain groups that will be bought out by the Chinese and, therefore, make a good investment from a buy and hold or buy and flip scenario.
I will cover more of the current Chinese trends and the number culture in later posts.
